Deafblindness – Basic Communication

£75 (group of 8) plus expenses

This course lasts 1- 1½ hours and is appropriate for anyone who may be in contact with people who have a dual sensory impairment – interested individuals who work in supermarkets, banks, restaurants, hospitals etc.

An Awareness of Deafblindness

£100 (group of 8) plus expenses

A 2-3 hour course for anyone who may need to interact with people who have a dual sensory impairment. This course is also a good introduction for professionals with little or no experience of deafblindness

Full Day Deafblind Awareness

£250 (group of 8) plus expenses

This course teaches basic communication skills and introduces resources available for deafblind people. It is suitable for people working in situations where they encounter a wide range of people such as residential homes, hospitals and shops.

Level 1 Certificate in Deafblind Awareness

£80 per person, £18 exam fee

This 10-hour day course, certificated by the CACDP, is aimed at anyone wanting to learn basic communication and guiding skills with deafblind people, either for work or for personal interest. This forms a good basis for the five day Communication and Guiding Skills course.

Level 2 Certificate in Deafblind Support Work

A 20-hour course that is appropriate for all staff in social work as well as social care staff in field, day care, home care and residential settings. This course acknowledges that the largest single group of deafblind people are elderly, most of whom rely on residual sight and hearing. Successful completion of this course can exempt candidates from the first two days of Communication and Guiding Skills Level 3 course.

Level 3 Certificate in Communication and Guiding Skills with Deafblind People

A five-day course with a qualification awarded by CACDP suitable for people who will pursue a career working with deafblind people, or professionals who wish to have in-depth knowledge of deafblindness.

CACDP Level 2 Certificate in Deafblind Support Worker

Level 4 Certificate in Deafblind Interpreting (Manual)

A six-day course plus examination. It is suitable for holders of the CACDP Communication and Guiding Skills certificate whose manual speed is 30 wpm or above. It is necessary to have a qualification in English Language for this course which is aimed at people who will pursue a career working with deaf and deafblind people.

Level 3 Certificate in Communication & Guiding Skills with deafblind people

Keyboard Interpreting Skills

£150 per person, £TBC exam fee

This is a three-day course to develop the necessary skills needed to interpret for deaf, visually impaired people, using a keyboard. It is appropriate for holders of the CACDP Interpreting (deafblind manual) qualification. Others who use a range of communication support methods may also find this training useful.

Hands-on Signing with Deafblind People

This three-day course is appropriate for skilled sign language users (minimum BSL Stage 2), and skilled guide/communicators who wish to encourage the continued use of sign language by deafblind people. It is also suitable for Sign language interpreters who wish to work in the deafblind world.

Level 1 & 2 Certificate in British Sign Language

Each year it is necessary for Deafblind Scotland Staff to undergo training in British Sign Language by participating in a daytime course. Where places are available we welcome others who find it more convenient to attend full day sessions. Stage 1 is a six-day course plus examination. Stage 2 is an eleven-day course plus examination for people who have completed Stage 1 and wish to progress further.

We also provide training/information seminars on:

  • Making consultation documents accessible to deafblind people.
  • Deprivation of information – the unavoidable effect of long-term dual impairment?
  • Disability Discrimination Act & its implications for those who have a dual sensory impairment.

Deafblind Scotland policy to enable deafblind people to teach deafblind manual in particular and course facilitators include deafblind members. Courses can be arranged at your own premises or in our training centre at Lenzie.
