On Sunday 15th June, sixteen days, five parties and over 1,000 miles after setting off from Land's End, Bob Nolan, Deafblind Scotland's chairman, and his deaf wife Louise, finally arrived in John O'Groats to complete their epic tandem cycle from the most southerly to the most northerly point of mainland Britain. Accompanied by Martin and Abigail Willis, former mates at Mary Hare School, they have overcome all the hazards that British roads could throw at them (including tractors, caravans and stray sheep) and in doing so have raised in excess of £25,000 for Deafblind Scotland so far, as well as increasing awareness of deafblindness, a key aim of the challenge. Given their sensory impairments, this was a remarkable achievement of great determination, stamina and resilience, and will no doubt inspire other deafblind people across Scotland to achieve their own personal goals.

The intrepid cyclists were feted at several parties organised along the route, and they received a tremendous welcome on arrival in Glasgow - home to Deafblind Scotland's HQ - on June 10th, with over fifty deafblind people and staff cheering them into George Square, before moving on to a special 'Celebration of Deablind Achievements' event which showcased Bob's amazing cycle, as well as other striking feats accomplished by several deafblind people in recent months. To round off the day in style, Bob and Louise were guests of honour at an evening party, where Bob got to show off his kilt for the final time.

Over the next few weeks, Bob and Louise hope to reach the £30,000 mark as sponsorship continues to come in, much needed funding that will contribute to the fund to establish a new, custom-built resource centre for deafblind people in Scotland, somewhere where deafblind people can be enabled to reach their full potential.

Drena O'Malley, Deafblind Scotland's Resources Officer, said "Bob is an inspiration to us all and a terrific role model for deafblind people who believe their active lives have prematurely come to an end."
