How to make best use of residual sight and hearing
Lighting

Sign and fingerspell in good lighting.
Carry on a conversation in a well-lit area if possible.
Make sure the light is shining on YOU.

Communication

Use a loop system in a quiet room for people with some residual hearing.
Don't Shout.
Speak clearly.

Distance

Always ask the person who has Usher Syndrome what is the best distance for them for their communication needs.

Clothing

It is important that you wear dark plain clothes to enable the person who has Usher Syndrome to communicate more easily. Patterns or bright clothes are not suitable for people who have Usher Syndrome. Ensure you stand in front of a plain contrasting background.

Stop and Sign

Stay in one place if you want to communicate, don't move around.

Position

Allow person who has Usher Syndrome to decide the best place for him/her to sit to follow signing, lip-reading or fingerspelling.

Low Furniture, Steps and Low Obstacles
