The
Deafblind
Manual Alphabet is one way for deafblind people to communicate. It may be
the only way for some congenitally deafblind people to communicate. Congenital
deafblindness causes people to be born deaf and blind or to develop it in early
childhood.
When communicating using Deafblind Manual, the
interpreter should sit on the right hand side of the deafblind person. This is
especially important if the deafblind person can speak. If the deafblind person
cannot speak then the person with the most to spell should sit on the right,
and at an angle of about 90 degrees.
If you are talking to a deafblind person while
standing or walking then the deafblind person should be on the left, with
his/her right hand facing upwards so that he/she can be guided at the same
time.
When you want to begin using Deafblind Manual,
you should put your hand over the deafblind person's hand.
Writing is usually fingers to palm, taking care
to avoid using fingernails. |
